Houses and Their Styles
by Jordan Etheridge
http://www.yphouses.com

Throughout the years houses have gone through
many transformations of styles and designs
depending on the location of the house and the era
in which it was built. There are some housing
styles that have stood strong over time and that are
still a model for the modern homes being built
today. Some of the popular house styles over the
years have included Cape Cod houses, Spanish-
Mediterranean houses, Greek Revival style homes,
the Tudor house, and French style houses.

A popular house style that was first seen in New
England during the later half of the seventeenth
century is the Cape Cod house. One of the reasons
that this home style was, and is still, so popular is
because of the flooring plan is symmetrical. As
well, the exterior of the home is pleasing to look at
with its wooden siding and a roof that is high and
gabled. After time chimneys were added to the
design of the house to keep the home warm when
the winters in New England were cold.

The Spanish-Mediterranean houses become popular
in the 1800~s when they were first built. These
houses have a roof that is low, flat, and made of red
tiles, and an exterior that is made of stucco to keep
the cool in and the heat of the day out. This house
style is often seen in the Southern states of America,
especially in California.

One of the most elegant styles of houses is the
Greek Revival home. These houses were first built
in the city of Philadelphia when architects with a
European flair designed homes after the Grecian
styling in Europe. The front porch is adorned with
heavy columns, giving the home a bold and austere
look and feel.

The Tudor house is reminiscent of the houses built
in Britain at the end of Medieval period. The
outside of the house is constructed of wood in dark
colors to resemble beams, with brick on the lower
portion of the home. Most Tudor homes have large
chimneys dominating one room and the upper floors
of the home are fashioned with gables. The Tudor
home is common today in upper class
neighborhoods because of its distinctive Anglophile
architecture.

French style houses have never lost their appeal
over the years. This is because they are simple yet
very stylish, featuring many fine details that you
won~t find on other house styles that include multi-
paned windows, interlocking block facades, and
shutters. The inside of the French style home is
considered to be traditional in that it has a dining
room, kitchen, and living room on the bottom floor,
with the bedrooms being upstairs.

Modern architects will continue to create house
styles that are a reflection of these times but
traditional styles for homes, such as the ones listed
above, will always be popular among home owners
because of their simplicity and beauty.
