If we want to understand the reason why each people have
chosen a particular kind of architecture through the
years, it is necessary to look at history. This is very
clear when we understand that there are many social and
cultural factors that have defined each of those types of
construction. We can also observe that the material of the
constructions with its potentialities, and the
development of the construction techniques, have made
possible for buildings to find an expression which is
coordinated with functional and cultural reasons.
The construction typology of every culture has been
influenced by many variables such as the weather, the
seismic phenomenon, the exploitation of the environment,
the availability of adequate resources and the capability
to work with them, the proximity and transportability of
these materials. Notwithstanding the importance of these
physical factors, it has to be admitted that the
architectural style of a people reflects their perspective
of life, their tradition and their ideas of permanence.
Therefore, it needs to be emphasized that the phenomenon of
architecture and construction can be seen only from the
historical perspective. Our modern cities have a
combination of the old and new architecture, which reflects
the past as much as the present needs and tendencies.
Moreover, our construction is based on the spectacular
improvements in almost all the variables mentioned earlier.
The structures that we see around us these days are
designed keeping in mind our needs and they outshine the
old constructions, not only in beauty and imagination, but
also in their utility. Buildings like the square arch in La
Defense, and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao are simply
impressive and outstanding. Nowadays, such a wide range of
construction materials are available that there is nothing
that is beyond constructing, and the modern structures, be
it a spectacular bus stop, or the tall sky scrappers, all
stand as witnesses to this fact. Materials like steel and
crystal have an amazing tendency to reflect amazing
highlights, whereas tiles and modern cover materials are
capable of reproducing colors in bizarre shapes. At night,
with neon lights, the contemporary structures spring to
life, and become quite a sight to watch. People enjoy
frequenting such places during the night.
Our work place and the place where we live reflect our
personality to a large extent. And, each one of us builds
and decorates his/her personal space with different colors,
shapes and sizes, thanks to the modern techniques of
construction. This goes on to show that the advancement in
the techniques of construction has not only led to the
creation of incredible public structures, but has
revolutionized the way we build our homes. The homes that
people used earlier were not as comfortable, beautiful, and
functional as the modern houses. Nowadays, a person can
choose his/her house based on their lifestyle, family size,
etc. Thanks to the modern construction technology, you can
easily get a house of your dreams constructed.
